While serving with the Michigan Community Service Commission from June 2021-August 2022, I worked on the 2020/2021 Governor's Service Awards project. Through this project, I vetted dozens of nominees of Michiganders who went above and beyond in their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. I also interviewed nominees, and wrote and edited the winners’ biographies. Throughout this project, I also ran the MCSC social media accounts to promote the project and search for additional nominees. Visit the campaign page here.

When I returned to MCSC as a Communications Associate for the 2024-2025 service year, my focus was primarily on Governor’s Service Awards prep for both years, including vetting nominees, writing and editing nominee biographies, creating press releases, leading media outreach to local publications, news stations, and radio shows, and ensuring some of the state’s most impactful volunteers were recognized by this honor. Linked here is the campaign.

Throughout this service year, I also wrote additional press releases and impact stories surrounding service days, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance.

I also prepared a disaster relief media kit, which can be found here.

My time with the Commission allowed me the space to talk with local changemakers and highlight the critical impact these individuals and organizations are making, even with limited funding and resources. Through MCSC’s support, many of these service projects were able to foster community resiliency, strengthening and uniting the state. Every day in this role was rewarding and fulfilling, even despite lapses in service and the government shutdown.
